چکیده

Progress is reported in parametrically controlled noise shaping sigma delta modulator (SDM) design. As this SDM structure can provide a higher SNR than normal SDM structures, Philips Research Laboratories questioned whether further improvement could be obtained using techniques inspired by the Trellis SDM. Simulations are used here to illustrate the performance of a parametrically controlled pseudo-Trellis SDM. The technique uses uniquely a variable state stepback approach to mediate loop behaviour that is shown to achieve robust stability in the presence of aggressive noise shaping and high level signals. Comparisons are made with traditional SDM structures and LPCM systems for high-resolution audio applications.

Time-Quantized Frequency Modulation, Time-Domain Dither, Dispersive Codes, and Parametrically Controlled Noise Shaping in SDM*

Time-domain quantization (TDQ) and noise shaping applied to linear frequency modulation (LFM) offers an alternative although unconventional means of generating uniformly sampled 1-bit code with characteristics similar to that generated by feedback sigma–delta modulation (SDM). Fundamental insight into the SDM process emerges by exploiting the relationship between uniform quantization and phase ...

Ultra high - resolution audio formats for mastering applications

To process audio signals prior to DSD and LPCM delivery, an audio data format is required that possesses a resolution substantially greater than the final release form. A number of strategies are presented capable of enhanced resolution. Techniques using the step-back algorithm are extended to include a multi-level quantizer but where the amplitude range is finite. An earlier scheme based upon ...

Trellis-Coded Quadrature-Phase-Shift Keying (QPSK) With Variable Overlapped Raised-Cosine Pulse Shaping

This article introduces the notion of uncoded, partially overlapped, staggered quadrature raised-cosine modulation (SQORC-P) as well as that of a trellis-coded form that is implemented as a specific embodiment of the recently introduced crosscorrelated trellis-coded quadrature modulation (XTCQM). Consideration is given to the power spectral density (PSD) of the scheme over both linear and nonli...

Modulation and System Techniques in PWM and SDM Switching Amplifiers*

Continuousand discrete-time switching audio power amplifiers are studied both with and without feedback. Pulse-width modulation (PWM) and sigma–delta modulation (SDM) amplifier configurations are simulated and their interrelationship is described using linear phase modulation (LPM) and linear frequency modulation (LFM). Distortion generation encountered when applying negative feedback to PWM is...

Ultrahigh-Resolution Audio Formats for Mastering and Archival Applications*

To store high-resolution audio signals efficiently prior to DSD or LPCM delivery the audio data format should have a dynamic range and bandwidth that are substantially greater than the final release form. Simple LPCM would dictate an excessive bit rate. Consequently coding is required that takes account of the normally low ultrasonic content of audio and the inherent high sampling rates. Severa...
